EM Badhrudeen
Managing Director
Muscat Projects Enviromental Services LLC
Famous English poet Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote these immortal lines in Ulysses: “But strong in will to strive, seek and find, not to yield”. Well, they hold true in the case of EM Badhrudeen, a first-generation entrepreneur from Thrissur in Kerala, India, who single-handedly built a flourishing business enterprise armed with sheer grit, the ability to sweat it out and perseverance. The manner in which he established Muscat Projects and Environmental Services LLC (MPES) in 2008 as a single-man-operated firm and later helped it grow into a multi-discipline business with more than 400 employees is truly inspiring for aspiring entrepreneurs. Specialised in water and wastewater management and operation of sewage treatment facilities, the firm serves a wide array of clients and they include Nama Water Services, Royal Oman Police, PDO and other entities from the public and private sectors.
From the Shores of Anthikkad to Oman
Born on 15-05-1961 in the coastal village of Anthikkad to Moidu, a farmer, and Fathima, a housewife, Badhrudeen specialised in electrical wiring after completing Class X. Little did he know that it would serve him good later on in life. When he was just 19, he got an opportunity to shift base to Muscat in July 1981. After spending a couple of days in the city, he joined his brother in Salalah who was running an embroidery boutique in the city. He extended a helping hand to the handful of employees by doing embroidery work on the traditional attire of Omani women.
The turning point came six months later when he landed a job in General Electronics. While working there, Badhrudeen bagged the contracts for electrical works in the Ministry of Defence. He continued there for four years. After marriage, he turned a new leaf in life by joining the Environmental Engineering Services LLC in Salalah as a senior supervisor. Slowly, he rose through the ranks to become a technical supervisor, technical engineer and operations manager. In the meantime, his sagacity made him widen his knowledge by means of several correspondence courses by sourcing materials from his home country. It was during his stint with this firm that Badhrudeen mastered the dynamics of sewage treatment plants which later stood him in good stead.
An Entrepreneur is Born
During those days, Waste Water Management came under the ambit of the Regional Municipality and the businessman in Badhrudeen made him think of ways to expand its distribution network. By remaining in the Environmental Engineering Company, he adopted strategies to launch his own enterprise with the permission and benevolence of his superiors. Thus Al Muzun was born in 2008. Within a year, what began as a single-employee enterprise expanded into a firm with 10 staff and a new office. The following year, he established an investment firm named Muscat Projects and Environmental Services. Later, he amalgamated both companies and stepped down from his previous firm.
Its core competency is water and wastewater management and it provides turnkey solutions including Design, Erection, Commissioning, and the Maintenance and Operation of Sewage Treatment and RO plants.
Recipes for Success
Badhrudeen attributes his success to his hard toil, simple upbringing and the wisdom to make the right choice at the opportune moment. Relying on determination, resilience and four decades of experience, he has been able to weather all storms and steer his establishment forward. In spite of the success streak, this peerless entrepreneur remains connected with his roots and is proud of his humble origins. Under his visionary leadership, MPES has witnessed stellar growth in terms of both infrastructure and human resources. The fact remains that his empathy, support and understanding have empowered his employees tremendously to create a conducive work atmosphere and leave a stamp of excellence in every project.
The Journey of Diversification
Knowing when to make the right decision, Badhrudeen soon decided to expand the horizon of his enterprise. That was how he started Buildex in 2011. Another enterprise was Al Kanz Building Materials in Rustaq and in 2012, he was able to open its branch in Suwaiq. His business connections and ingenuity won him several water and wastewater management contracts in various governorates one after the other. The latest feather in his cap of achievements is the franchise of Linen Fabrics, reminiscent of his days in the embroidery boutique in Salalah.
Even while cruising on the highway of success, he is equally aware of his responsibility to give back to society its rightful share. That is why Badhrudeen is engaged in philanthropic activities. 2023 proved to be a providential year for him as he was able to expand his business and technology partnership by striking a crucial deal with Gradiant International Overseas PTE Ltd. Gradiant is a leading water treatment firm that has unique solutions to help leading brands reduce, reclaim and renew the water they use by means of state-of-the-art water treatment technology. With this strategic deal, Badhrudeen hopes to bring innovation to the industry and expand the reach of his enterprise.
The firm has expanded its core business activity by including Laboratory services, Engineering workshops, Solid Waste Management, Sales and Marketing of Electro-Mechanical equipment, supply of Specialty Chemicals and Environmental Consultancy. They also expanded their footprints to India by establishing the Muscat Projects and Environmental Services (India) Pvt Ltd in 2017.
Family and Passion
Badhrudeen enjoys the unwavering support of his better half, Arifa, and his children Fabitha and Fausitha. Fabitha, who takes care of HR, Admin and Finance Departments, is married to Muhammad Rafeek, who is the Marketing Manager of the trading division. They have two kids Nazifa Maryam and Harun Ibn Muhammed. The youngest daughter Fausitha takes care of the tender department. Her husband, Muhammed Rameez, serves as the Marketing Manager of chemicals. They have two children Aaiz Arzan and Aalam Badar. When not preoccupied with his business establishments, Badhrudeen finds time to pursue his passions. They include books, gardening, interior designing, and travelling. He nurtures a whole range of plants according to each season and loves to lend creative touches to interiors. An avid traveller, he mostly prefers places of historical significance and also owns a magnificent collection of antiques collected over the years. The veteran entrepreneur is also active in philanthropy and is involved with several social causes. A fan of sports, especially soccer, Badhrudeen also spares no effort to update his skills and knowledge base.
