Dr. Rajgopal Radhakrishnan Nair, a Specialist Anaesthetist at Khoula Hospital in Muscat, is a distinguished medical professional and a creative powerhouse. Originally from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, his journey spans an accomplished career in anesthesiology and a thriving passion for literature, drama, and cultural endeavors. Dr. Rajgopal did his schooling in St. Joseph’s High School, Thiruvanathapura, and his MBBS from Trivandrum Medial College. After graduating, he worked in the Department of Forensic Sciences at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College from 1996 to 1997. Later, he switched to the field of anesthetics after taking leave. He briefly worked at the Indo-American Hospital in Vaikom.
Dr. Rajgopal was appointed through the Public Service Commission and joined the Health Service in Government of Kerala. He worked at the Women and Child Hospital, in Thiruvananthapuram from 2000 to 2004.
Dr. Rajgopal joined the Khoula Hospital in Muscat, the Sultanate of Oman in 2004 where he is Anesthesia Specialist in the Department of Anesthesia and the Intensive Care Unit.
Although a successful physician, Dr. Rajgopal is a multi-talented person who dabbles in Short writing, Script writing, Acting in dramas, directing dramas and organizing cultural events. During his school days, he was active in cultural competitions. He wrote stories in periodicals such as Kalakamudi, Katha and Samakalika Malayalam Varika. He has won the first place in short story in the Kerala University Youth Festival in 1988. He had also won first place in the Inter Medical Youth Festival for Short Story and Best Actor categories. He was also the Arts Club Secretary at Trivandrum Medical College while studying there.
Dr. Rajgopal had won the Special Jury Award for scripting ‘Jeevante Avashistam’ in 2014 from the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi.
The organisations he set up in Muscat, Trivandrum Entertainers in Muscat (TEAM) and Rainbow Club in Muscat, are testimony to his organizing skills.
Dr. Rajagopal has been very active in the cultural scene in Muscat ever since he arrived in Oman. He had won the Pravasi Sahitya Puraskaram in 2019 of the Vayalar Rama Varma Samskara Vedi for his contributions to the cultural field. He also won the Special Achievement Award of the Malayalam wing of the India Social Club in 2017. He had helped organise the Drama Festival in Muscat and directed and acted in the stage. He had won the Special Jury Award for ‘Pratheeksha’ drama, in 2022.
He had directed plays, ‘Adapradhaman’ and ‘Paithrukam’, for the Malayalam wing of the India Social Club. He also scripted and directed ‘Sharmishtha’ written by well-known writer N.S. Madhavan.
Dr. Rajagopal’s ‘Maruthukali’ was scripted by Mr. Rohit Kozoor and staged under the direction of K.V. Manjulan in Muscat. Another of his stories that has mesmerized Muscat audience is his award-winning play Adakka. Dr. Rajagopal has written and directed 14 plays. Dr. Rajagopal is also a short film maker. ‘Shakuntalaude Bharyhavu’ and ‘Dwayam’ that he directed were screened in 2011 and 2012 in Oman International Short Film Festival.
Late film director Lenin Rajendran released two short story collections of Dr. Rajgopal, Adaykka in 2010 and Ezhutheevandikal in 2017.
Dr. Rajagopal is married to Dr. Asalatha R.S, Ayurvedic consultant at All Season Ayurveda Clinic, Muscat. The couple has two sons — Dr. Nanda Kishore MDS, an orthodontist working at Kamala Dental Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram and Chandrakiran, is doing his M.Sc. in Food Business and Innovation in the University College of Cork, Ireland.
