Nizwa,Sultanate of Oman

If the ancient healing science of Ayurveda is making inroads in the Sultanate, then a doctor couple deserves special praise for their stellar efforts to propagate it. Dr. B. K. Venugopalan and Dr Lekshmy Mangatte have been running the Indian Ayurvedic Clinic under the Safwat Al Ghubra Enterprise since 2000 and the establishment is an oasis of wellness in Nizwa, offering treatment to a whole gamut of ailments using herbal remedies that are sourced from Kerala.

A Healing Journey

Dr. Venugopalan hails from Manjeri, Malappuram District; he was born to the late Ayyappan, a farmer, and Unnooli, a homemaker. Dr. Lekshmy is the daughter of Dr. M. K. Narayanan, retired CMO and owner of Agatha Ayurvedic Manufacturing Unit, and the late Saradha, who was known for Visha chikitsa or toxicology treatment.

It was in 2000 that Dr. Venugopalan reached the Sultanate, and he established an ayurvedic practice in Firq, Nizwa. Dr. Lekshmy also joined. Initially, there were only four employees in the clinic, and in the same year, both doctors received MOH licenses.

About Indian Ayurvedic Clinic

Today, their Indian Ayurvedic Clinic near Firq in Nizwa is much sought after by patients, both expats as well as Omanis. Remaining true to the ethos of Ayurveda, which treats the ailment from its roots, the doctor couple brings the healing touch to a wide range of maladies such as joint problems, back pain, arthritis, disc bulge, headache, sciatica, paralysis, skin disorders, stress-related conditions and insomnia.

Many patients flock to the clinic seeking relief from joint pain, swelling, and immobility. For such conditions, the doctors prescribe massage along with the application of poultice and special herbal bandages. They help to improve circulation, reduce inflammation and repair tissues and ligaments, and lubricate the joins.

One of the main highlights of Ayurveda is the rejuvenation therapy or panchakarma that leaves the body and mind revitalised. The therapies include abhyanga (full-body warm oil massage from head to toe), udwartanam (a deep-tissue massage with the help of special herbal powders), shirodhara (continuous pouring of a gentle stream of warm milk, oil or buttermilk on the forehead to induce stress relief and provide mental clarity), vasti (introducing medicated oils or herbal concoctions into the rectum to treat chronic diseases), and medicated lepana (application of a thick medicated herbal paste on specific areas to treat localised conditions). These treatments improve circulation, corrects digestion and metabolism and boosts vital functions.

Obesity and Infertility Treatment

There are also specific treatment methods for obesity, which causes several lifestyle diseases. Ayurveda prescribes udwartanam, swedanam (sweating treatment using moist or dry heat), and virechanam, which is purgation to remove toxins. This wellness centre also has modalities such as abhyanga, special uterine massages and shirodhara to treat infertility issues in both men and women.

Another highlight of the clinic is the post-delivery care to heal the body, inner organs and help the mother tide over postpartum depression, stress and insomnia. The treatment regimen comes with special massages, herbal bandages for the abdomen, warm bath in medicated water, head massage and shirodhara.
