Blending a passion for healthcare leadership, experience, and expertise as a resilient and resourceful physician is Dr James Kumar Pallivathukkal, who is serving as the Head Lead of the Internal Medicine Department and the Head of Quality Control at Badr Al Samaa Royal Hospital in Muscat. Having 23 years of experience in the medical profession, including 15 years of service in the Sultanate, Dr James has been with Badr Al Samaa since 2022.

The hallmark of his stellar career is the commitment to patient care and health education. Dr James is at the forefront of developing and implementing health awareness programmes and empowering students with critical knowledge. He empowers them to foster a profound understanding of health concerns across communities. As the Head Lead, Dr James manifests exceptional leadership across OPD services to ensure the highest standards of clinical excellence and patient-centred healthcare. He also manages inpatient care, the emergency room, and the ICU. He is also a member of the Ethics Committee, Infection Control Committee, and the Pharmacy Council. He actively contributes to clinical governance, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives. He also did consultancy for level A and B hospital setup for Aster Al Rafa in Ghubrah.

Dr James is an Action Committee Member for staff engagement and welfare activities at Badr Al Samaaa Royal Hospital, and he has been serving as an Executive Committee Member of the Indian Medical Association in the Sultanate since 2017.

Educational Background

Hailing from Muttom in Thodupuzha of Idukki District, Dr James was born as the son of agriculturist P A Joseph and Mercy Joseph, a housewife. His passion for medical studies led him to Vinayaka Missions Kirupananda Variyar Medical College and Hospital in Salem, Tamil Nadu, where he graduated in 2002. Five years later, he bagged his MD in Internal Medicine from Manipal Institute of Health Sciences in Karnataka. He has an MSC, PG Diploma in Diabetes from Cardiff University in the UK, an MBA in Hospital Management from Vinayaka Missions University, MSC in Diabetes from Cardiff University, DBA from Coventry University in the UK, a Certificate Course in Emergency Medicine from Apollo Hospital and Med Varsity in Hyderabad, Certificate Course in Rheumatology from Delhi IMA, Physician Leadership from Stanford Medicine, and a Certificate in Management and Entrepreneurship from Kings College in London. He is also a Member of the American College of Endocrinologists. Dr James has also published papers in several peer-reviewed journals.


Medical Journey

Before joining Badr Al Samaa, Dr James was the Internal Medicine Specialist of Atlas-NMC Hospital in Muscat from 2012 to 2022. During the pandemic, he was in charge of the intensive care operations and employed complex analysis to guide treatment decisions and provide optimal care as a Lead Physician. As the Director of COVID-19 operations, he played a major role in developing and implementing care strategies for three hospitals in Muscat and served more than two lakh patients during that time of crisis. To him goes the credit of managing 750 critically ill COVID patients in the ICU.

From 2007 to 2012, Dr James worked at MBBM Hospital in Kothamangalam, Ernakulam District, as a Specialist Physician. There, he was the in-charge Clinical Lead for ICU and ER. He also strove to enhance the ambit of health education programmes and presented health information to the public about disease awareness, prevention, and management.

Other Responsibilities

Dr James was part of the Operations and Administration Management of Bin Said Polyclinic in Seeb from 2014 to 2017. He handled the responsibility of clinical development, brand awareness, and business management. From 2015 to 2020, Dr James was part of the Oman Health Care Project Consultancy, which was a detailed private healthcare project that included primary, secondary, and tertiary care facilities. He was in charge of key account operation, budget management, medical management, and crafting the marketing strategy.

Fostering Medical Education

Apart from being a healer, Dr James is enthusiastic about medical education and making contributions as a teacher. From 2007 to 2015, he used to teach dental and nursing students in Baselios College and was the university examiner for MG University in Kottayam. He was also the internal examiner for Annoor Dental College in Muvattupuzha. Dr James also taught BDS students. As Chief Quality Manager, he teaches the hospital staff healthcare quality management, which includes JCI-accreditation training. He is also a regular speaker in multiple CME activities in Oman, and his favourite topic is cardio-metabolic disorders. He was also invited to speak at the Oman Health Conference in 2023.

Family and Passions

Dr James is passionate about farming, driving, and travelling. He is married to Telma Rani George, a Prosthodontist at Badr Al Samaa Hospital in Ruwi. Their children, Katherine James and Sarah James, are students at the British School Muscat.
