Dr. Shihan Abdul Rasheed
Chairman,
Wankan Shotokan Karate International,Oman

In a world where traditions often fade in the face of modernity, Dr. Shihan Abdul Rasheed stands as a steadfast sentinel of classical martial arts. Hailing from the culturally rich town of Tirur in Kerala’s Malappuram district, Dr. Rasheed has transformed his early passion for sports into a lifelong dedication to the discipline and philosophy of karate. Today, he is not only an 8th Dan Black Belt but also the visionary founder and Chairman of Wankan Shotokan Karate International (WSKI), a global martial arts institution he established in 2007. His story is a compelling blend of personal grit, cultural reverence, and an unrelenting quest for excellence.
Though Dr. Rasheed’s formal education was modest, his informal education—in the dojo—was rigorous and transformative. Beginning his martial journey in 1984, he immersed himself in the study of Shotokan Karate, a style known for its powerful linear movements, deep stances, and philosophical underpinnings rooted in discipline, humility, and respect. Shotokan is one of the four major styles of traditional karate and was popularized by Master Gichin Funakoshi, whose teachings emphasized the development of character alongside physical ability.
In 2024, Dr. Rasheed’s lifelong commitment to the martial path was honoured when he received his 8th Degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate from Japan—a prestigious recognition awarded only to those who exemplify mastery, leadership, and moral integrity. Further deepening his contribution to martial arts scholarship, he also earned a PhD in Karate, positioning himself not just as a practitioner but as a global thought leader in martial arts education.
Building a Global Movement
Founded with ten senior instructors, WSKI was born from Dr. Rasheed’s vision of preserving the authentic spirit of Shotokan Karate while making it accessible across borders. Under his dynamic leadership, the organization has expanded to over 14 countries, establishing itself as a global standard-bearer for traditional karate instruction. WSKI’s curriculum strictly adheres to the principles of Shotokan, emphasizing technical excellence, ethical conduct, and cultural integrity.
Dr. Rasheed’s leadership style is both charismatic and inclusive—he continues to mentor hundreds of instructors and travels extensively to oversee dojos and conduct grading ceremonies, seminars, and martial arts camps worldwide. His efforts have not only propagated WSKI’s reputation but have helped position Shotokan Karate as both a discipline of self-defense and a path to personal transformation.

Born to the late Kunjali, a businessman based in Bangalore, and Bheemu, a devoted homemaker, Dr. Rasheed has preserved and passed on the values of discipline, resilience, and integrity to his family. His wife, Rukhiya, a homemaker, has been a steadfast supporter of his journey. Their three sons are not just inheritors of his legacy but active participants in it.
Shan Badhusha, the eldest, is a businessman and a **3rd Dan Black Belt**, serving as an instructor at a Muscat dojo. Shan Bakkarsha, also a 3rd Dan, is closely involved in WSKI’s daily operations. Shan Basharshah, the youngest, is currently a 12th-grade student and holds a 1st Dan Black Belt.
Their collective commitment underscores a household that breathes the spirit of martial discipline and unity.
Dr. Shihan Abdul Rasheed’s life and work illuminate the profound impact that martial arts can have—not just on individual bodies and minds, but on communities and cultures across the globe. Through Wankan Shotokan Karate International, he has crafted a vibrant and disciplined network of practitioners committed to excellence. His story is more than a biography—it is a living testament to how passion, purpose, and perseverance can create a legacy that transcends borders and generations.
