Armed with sheer dedication, hard work, and diligence, Nissar Edathum Chalil has carved a niche for himself in the healthcare industry of the Sultanate of Oman. This young ace entrepreneur is the founder and Managing Director of Avicen, a 60 million USD healthcare firm, which is also the second largest pharmaceutical retail chain in Oman. Since 2009, this establishment has been delivering quality healthcare at an affordable cost for both Omanis as well as expatriates. What began as a single-store outlet in Ibri has now grown to more than 44 branches over the past 15 years thanks to the able stewardship of Nissar.

An entrepreneur who is riding the waves of success, Nissar is blessed with so many qualities, including risk tolerance, resilience, innovativeness, and problem-solving to name a few. His business is fuelled by his growth mindset that involves perceiving intelligence, abilities and talents as learnable and capable of improvement. He is also skilled in Business Management, Business Analysis, Business Development, Training, Project Management, Negotiation, Human Resources Management, Scheduling, Presentations, and Public Speaking.

A Journey That Began in Nochad

Hailing from Nochad in Kozhikode district, Nissar was born to Yusuf, a businessman, and Nabeesa, a housewife. After high school, he decided that pharma was his field of interest and he joined Dr MGR University in Chennai for BPharm, which he successfully completed in 2006. The same year, he started his career at Tablets India Ltd as a Medical Representative. Ambitious and eager to expand his skill sets, Nissar joined Novartis the following year as Marketing Executive. It was while working there that he got a chance to go to the Middle East. He went to Dubai, where he worked at Aster Pharmacy as a pharmacist until 2009. That year, he joined Fathima Hospital in India as Marketing Manager.

In 2010, he moved to the Sultanate of Oman where he started Al Rajja Integrated Company dealing with the distribution of surgical equipment and accessories. He proved his mettle as an entrepreneur by going ahead and launching Saja National Company dealing with the distribution of pharmaceuticals. In 2012, he laid the foundation of Avicen by roping in two partners—Shabeer Ali and Mohamed Rafeeq. And the rest is history. Today, it is the second-largest pharmacy chain in Oman and Nissar also runs the Sagar Polyclinic, a testament to the group’s commitment to comprehensive care.

Family and Passions

Nissar enjoys the support of his spouse Remna, a scholar-lecturer, and they are blessed with five children. Their son Nehan Bin Nissar is in Class VI, daughter Aisha Izzah is in Class V, daughter Fatima Zeba is in Class II, son Bilal Bin Nissar is in LKG and the youngest child is Batool Nissar. He is passionate about travelling, reading and motivation training. He has already visited 30 countries around the globe. Nissar has also won the prestigious Business Excellence Award instituted by Gulf Madhyamam daily in lieu of his immense achievements in the pharma sector.
