Sunil Kattakath

Sr.Project Controls Engineer
Sultan Haitem City, Oman

In the world of construction and infrastructure, where precision, foresight, and leadership are indispensable, the story of Sunil Kattakath is one of resilience, dedication, and vision. Over the course of nearly three decades, he has carved a distinguished career as an engineer, project controller, and community leader, bridging technical excellence with a passion for service. Today, as Sr. Project Control Engineer at Sultan Haitem City and Convener of the SMC of Indian School Al Ghubra and Treasurer of the SMC of Care and Special Education,  Muscat, Sunil stands as a professional whose journey reflects both personal grit and professional accomplishment.

Born on September 12, 1972, in Kerala, India, Sunil grew up in a household that valued hard work, integrity, and aspiration. His father, the late Abdul Salam, had spent years working in Saudi Arabia and Oman before settling in Kerala, Oman he served as Sales Head at the Ali Shaihani Group. His mother, Nafeesa, dedicated her life to being a homemaker, nurturing the family with quiet strength.

Sunil’s formative years were shaped by the values instilled in him at home and the education he received. He began his schooling at Santhiniketan English Medium School (1977–1983), where he developed a love for learning. He completed his secondary education at Panangad High School (1983–1988) before pursuing higher studies in mathematics at MES Asmabi College, Kodungallur (1988–1991). His analytical mind and aptitude for problem-solving drew him naturally toward engineering, and in 1991, he enrolled at the NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad, where he earned his B.Tech in Civil Engineering (1991–1995).

The transition from mathematics to engineering was not merely academic but a reflection of Sunil’s deeper interest in building, planning, and creating structures of lasting impact. The rigorous training at NSS equipped him with the technical foundation and discipline that would later underpin his career.

Fresh out of college, Sunil began his professional journey in India with KAP India Projects and Constructions Pvt. Ltd., Thrissur, in May 1996. Over the next four and a half years, he honed his skills as a Project Engineer, working on diverse construction projects. This period was crucial in grounding him in the practical realities of civil engineering, from design execution to managing site operations and coordinating with multiple stakeholders.

By the time he left KAP India in late 2000, Sunil had earned a reputation as a diligent and capable engineer, ready for bigger challenges.

The turning point in Sunil’s career came when he moved to Oman in December 2000 to join Galfar Engineering and Contracting SAOG, one of the largest and most respected construction companies in the Middle East. Over nearly twenty-five years at Galfar, Sunil rose through the ranks, eventually serving as Manager (Planning and Controls).

At Galfar, he became part of teams that delivered some of Oman’s most significant infrastructure projects. Among them, the SBG Toyota Showroom, Oman Medical College, Crowne Plaza Hotel Sohar and Al Mawela Interchange stood out as milestones. These projects were not only technically demanding but also emblematic of Oman’s modernization drive. Sunil’s role was pivotal in planning, coordinating, and ensuring projects were delivered on time and within scope.

Working in an organization that employed over 25,000 people and managed a fleet of more than 7,400 pieces of equipment, Sunil learned to balance the demands of large-scale project management with a keen eye on safety, quality, and reliability. Galfar’s ethos—certified under ISO standards and globally recognized for its health, safety, and environmental practices—resonated with his own professional values.

His career at Galfar offered him more than just technical expertise; it gave him insights into leadership, cross-cultural collaboration, and the ability to navigate challenges in a competitive industry. When he finally bid farewell to Galfar in mid-2025, he left behind a legacy of two and a half decades marked by loyalty, excellence, and impact.

In June 2025, Sunil embarked on a new journey as Sr.Project Controller at the Sultan Haitem City in Muscat. This role represents not just a career progression but also a recognition of his expertise and leadership in Oman’s infrastructure landscape.

Parallel to his professional journey, Sunil has been deeply engaged in community service, particularly in the field of education. As Convener of the School Management Committee (SMC) at Indian School Al Ghubra (ISG) and Treasurer of the Care and Special Education, he plays a pivotal role in steering one of Oman’s premier Indian schools.

His tenure has been marked by a hands-on involvement in school events and initiatives—from Independence Day celebrations to the CBSE Oman Cluster Swimming Meet and the Round Square Carnival. Sunil’s ability to engage with students, parents, and dignitaries reflects his belief in education as a transformative force.

His leadership at ISG is not merely administrative but rooted in a genuine desire to give back to the community and support the holistic development of young learners.

Beyond his professional and community roles, Sunil is known for his humility and strong family values. He is married to Fazeela Sunil, a commerce graduate from St. Joseph’s College, Irinjalakuda, who has been a steadfast partner in his journey. Together, they are raising two sons: Aman Sunil, currently in his fourth year of B.Tech at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), and Aamir Sunil, a bright student in the 11th grade at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kodungallur.

Despite his demanding career, Sunil has remained committed to charitable initiatives, reflecting his deep-rooted belief in social responsibility. His balanced approach to work, family, and community has earned him respect across professional and personal circles.

The trajectory of Sunil Kattakath’s life mirrors the journey of many Indians who have contributed to Oman’s growth story while building fulfilling lives abroad. Yet, what sets him apart is the blend of professional excellence, community leadership, and personal integrity. As he continues to helm responsibilities that impact both Oman’s urban landscape and the education of future generations, Sunil embodies the ideal of a professional who builds not just structures, but communities and legacies.
