Managing Director
Falcon Printers, United Printers, and Modern Sign Star
In the world of business, few industries have witnessed as much transformation as printing. What was once a purely mechanical trade has today become a field that blends art, technology, and precision. For Surendran K, the Managing Director of Falcon Graphics, United Printers, and Modern Sign Star, the printing industry has not just been a livelihood, but a lifelong passion, a commitment, and a journey of resilience. From his modest beginnings in Kerala to becoming a respected name in Oman’s printing sector, Surendran’s career is a testimony to vision, adaptability, and relentless determination.
Surendran hails from Thalassery in Kerala’s Kannur district, a place known for its rich cultural history and sporting spirit. Born on May 25, 1960, he grew up in a simple household where his father, the late Govindan, was a farmer and his mother, the late Yesodha, was a homemaker. From a young age, Surendran imbibed values of hard work and perseverance that would later become his guiding principles.
He pursued a BA in English, a choice that reflected his interest in academics and communication, while also nurturing a love for sports. During his youth, he represented his district in football, developing qualities of teamwork and discipline that would serve him well in business.
On August 20, 1983, Surendran set foot in Oman. Like many young professionals of his generation, he arrived with modest resources but with big dreams of building a better life. His early days were far from easy. He initially worked with his brother, who was an engineer at Al Amran Constructions. Though the job offered him stability, Surendran soon realized that his true calling lay elsewhere.
It was in the printing sector that Surendran found his passion. He began working at different printing presses in Muscat, each experience shaping his skills and understanding of the business. A brief stint at Al Raffa Printing Press lasted four months, followed by a longer engagement at Al AQueda Printing Press, where he worked for 13 years. These years were formative, exposing him to the nuances of offset printing, client management, production schedules, and the rapidly growing demand for quality print services in Oman.
During these years, Surendran began dreaming of owning a press of his own. He realized that printing was not just about machines and ink, but about meeting the communication needs of a society that was modernizing at an incredible pace. The idea of building a business that could offer high-quality, reliable, and innovative printing solutions began to take root.
Two and a half decades ago, that dream became a reality with the establishment of Falcon Graphics, which later evolved into Falcon Printers LLC with an Omani partner. This marked the true beginning of Surendran’s entrepreneurial journey. Starting with just two staff members, Falcon Printers was built on the principles of quality, customer trust, and consistent delivery.
What began as a small setup soon grew into one of Oman’s respected names in printing. Today, Falcon Printers employs a workforce of over 60 people, a testament to its growth and Surendran’s vision. His wife, Vanitha Surendran, stood firmly beside him during these formative years. The couple often worked 20-hour days, managing everything from finances to quotations, supplies to procurement. The family’s collective effort ensured that the company was built without external dependence, a true example of self-reliance.
Recognizing the growing demand for specialized printing, Surendran expanded his footprint by establishing United Printers LLC in Wadi Kabir in 2010. For 15 years, this press focused on offset printing, becoming a reliable name for businesses and institutions across Muscat.
In 2015, he launched Modern Sign Star, a venture that catered to the rising need for signage and branding solutions. This diversification highlighted Surendran’s ability to read market trends and adapt swiftly. Later, in 2022, he further broadened his portfolio with Abu Hani LLC, a special package printing business that tapped into Oman’s growing retail and packaging sector.
Through these enterprises, Surendran demonstrated that printing is not just about paper—it is about ideas, visibility, and communication. His companies became partners in growth for countless businesses, helping them project their identities and reach wider audiences.
Despite his professional success, Surendran remains deeply connected to his roots in Kerala. Back home, he has invested in building commercial complexes, including the Falcon Building, a three-story structure of about 5,000 square feet. He also owns rental flats near Malabar B.Ed. Training College in Peravoor, Kannur.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, he had ventured into farming, but later converted the land into a rubber estate. Looking ahead, he hopes to return to Kerala someday to pursue large-scale farming, including floriculture, cattle rearing, and pisciculture, bringing his entrepreneurial drive full circle back to the soil.
In Oman, Surendran is actively involved in the community as a member of the Indian Social Club, Kerala Wing, and Kannur Connect, platforms that keep him tied to his cultural roots while strengthening his business network.
Surendran’s story is also a family story. His wife Vanitha has been his strongest pillar of support, involved in every detail of the business. Their elder son, Vyshak, a B.Tech graduate in Mechanical Engineering, now works alongside his father in the printing ventures. Vyshak’s wife, Ashika, a post-graduate in Commerce, also supports the family’s business legacy, and together they are raising a young son. The younger son, Sayanth, holds an MBA from Canada and is building his career abroad, carrying forward the family’s entrepreneurial spirit.
For Surendran, printing is more than ink on paper—it is a bridge between businesses and people, a way to tell stories, share knowledge, and strengthen connections. Over the decades, he has witnessed the industry’s evolution from manual methods to today’s high-tech digital systems, and his companies have always stayed ahead of the curve.
From Falcon Printers to United Printers and Modern Sign Star, Surendran’s ventures have not just survived but thrived in a competitive market, leaving a strong imprint on Oman’s printing landscape. As he looks forward to the next chapter of his life—balancing business with his desire to return to farming—Surendran carries with him a legacy of excellence, a spirit of community, and the satisfaction of building businesses that tell stories every day.
