It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Biju Purushothaman is a poet among karate masters and a karate exponent among poets in the NRI fraternity of the Sultanate. Engaged in the installation and servicing of air conditioners and refrigerators for more than 20 years in Oman, Biju is more known for his soul-stirring verses and martial arts prowess. Based in Nizwa, this Third Dan Black Belt holder has been running the Wankan Shotokan Karate International academy since 2017.
A Journey That Began in Karunagappally
Biju was born in Alumkadavu in Karunagappally in Kollam District, where he was born to the late K Purushothaman, a former employee of Food Corporation of India, and Rathnakumari, a housewife. After schooling, he pursued an ITI course after which he worked as an instructor at R Sankar Memorial ITC at Karunagappally for one year. Then he studied Commerce after which he toed the spiritual line by conducting Bhagavatham recitals. He then joined Voltas as an AC technician in Kollam and worked in that capacity for a year.
It was in 2002 that Biju got the chance to move to the Sultanate where he joined Rum al Safa al Asriya Trading, which is into AC servicing and new installations. Indian School is a trusted client and three years ago, they started undertaking A/C installation works in villas as well.
By the time he arrived in Oman, he was a certified Black Belt holder and his love for martial arts and the urge to train youngsters in it led him to establish a gym and fitness centre near Indian School Nizwa . There, in that humble set up, he and his wife began to train a small batch of students in Shotokan Karate. So far they have trained more than 10 Black Belt holders and more than 300 students have learned these self defense techniques under the husband-wife duo. Biju also takes karate classes in other cities as well. Interestingly, his wife, son and daughter are all Black Belt holders, a feat that makes him proud.
Family and Passions
Blocks, punches and kicks apart, Biju is a gifted poet and lyricist with a penchant for mimicry and folk theatre. A multi-faceted individual, his anthology entitled ‘Nilavilakal’ fetched him the Malayatoor Kavitha Puraskaram. His maiden lyrical venture, ‘Ariyathe’, a love song, received rave reviews on social media platforms in 2024.
Biju is also passionate about kakkarissi natakam, a folk theatre in Kerala, and he was instrumental in starting the Malayalee Kootayma in Izki. It was in 2016 that he became IMK secretary and was instrumental in conducting various cultural events. Biju is also the former unit secretary of WMF. He is married to Athira Biju, who is a karate exponent and fitness trainer. Their son, Madhav Biju, is in Class X at Indian School Nizwa, and daughter, Malavika Biju is in the same school as a Class VIII student.
