Among the expatriates in the medical fraternity in Oman, Dr. Basheer Alikaparambil has been doing yeoman service to the country and society by serving as the Medical Director of Badr Al Samaa Hospital in Ruwi for the past 23 years. He has an MD in Internal Medicine and Diploma in Diabetes from the UK. Dr. Basheer also has a Diploma in Respiratory Medicine from Royal College of Physicians in Britain, a Postgraduate Diploma in Diabetes from the UK, Postgraduate Training in Diabetes from the American Diabetic Association, and Postgraduate Training in Complicated Diabetes from Harvard University in the USA.The first specialist doctor from Kalikavu Panchayat in Malappuram District, he is well known in his hometown for his philanthropic deeds.
A Journey That Began in Kartheni
A small village in Malappuram Dt., where he was born as the son of Backer Sahid, a well-known timber merchant in the region, and Asiya, a housewife. After completing his pre-degree, he joined Kozhikode Medical College from where he graduated in 1992. For three years, he worked as Medical Officer at Moulana Hospital in Perinthalmanna for three years. In 1995, he quit to pursue his postgraduate studies at Amritsar Medical College. After completing his post graduation, Dr Basheer worked at Assumption Hospital in Sultan Bathery from 2001 to 2002.
It was in 2003 that the turning point in his professional life came. That year, he moved to Muscat where he joined the newly established Badr Al Samaa Hospital in Ruwi in the Internal Medicine Department. Over the years, he proved his mettle as a man blessed with the healing touch and compassion. It was his prudent vision that led to Badr Al Samaa setting up the first ICU for COVID patients when the pandemic broke out. Day and night, he attended to more than 200 serious cases that required ventilator support, and the survival rate was amazing. During that time, he happened to treat a critically ill pregnant Malayali woman in the ICU. Though she was on ventilator support, Dr. Basheer’s treatment and care gave her a lease of life. When she gave birth to a baby boy after recovering, the grateful family named him Basheer in thanksgiving for the man who saved the mother.
Accolades and Philanthropy
Because of his stellar service to society, Dr. Basheer was bestowed with the Best Doctor Award by both Asianet and Kairali television channels. In 2025, he won the special award of the Indian Medical Association (IMA). He was one of the founders of the first overseas branch of the Indian Medical Association and served as the president of IMA Oman and an executive member of IMA NRI. He is aggressively active in academic activities. regularly conducts CMEs and is a well-known orator among the medical fraternity of Oman. Currently chairman of IMA CME committee.
He was into various research studies conducted in Oman and at international level, especially about diabetes and communicable disease. Dr. Basheer also into sports & arts. He is the chairman of the Badr Sports Club. He was the winner of IMA shuttle championship.
About Badr Al Samaa Group of Hospitals
Badr Al Samaa Group of Hospitals is the largest private healthcare group in Oman and its footprints are in other GCC countries as well. Dr. Basheer has been part of Badr Al Samaa since its establishment. It had a modest beginning in 2002 as a polyclinic and grew steadily over the years to attain its current stature.
In 2025, Badr Al Samaa Group of Hospitals made its way to the Guinness Book of World Records by conducting the largest free diabetes screening and risk assessment campaign in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. Dr. Basheer was among the key organizers responsible for coordinating the campaign.
Passions & Family
When he does not wear the white overcoat, Dr Basheer loves to devote time to football and shuttle badminton. During his student days in Kozhikode, he was the Arts Club Secretary of the Medical College. Back in his hometown, there is a club in memory of his father named Backer Memorial Sports Club.
Besides sports, he also engages in a lot of philanthropic activities by providing endowments for children from financially backward families, arranging scholarships for kids who score high marks in Class X and providing help for medical treatment and marriages.
He is married to Sini, a homemaker. Their eldest son Suhail is the Sn. Associate of MARA Energy Investment Company in New York. The youngest son Nihal is a software engineer in Australia.
