A man who finds fulfilment in embedding innovation firmly in the path of his entrepreneurial gallop, Shaisal Yoosuf is known among expatriates in Oman as the brain behind Voltova, the first hybrid solar air conditioner in the country. It was his eye for metamorphosis that made him leverage his expertise in the power sector to come out with this eco-friendly and cost-effective cooling device that suits all sorts of buildings, from villas to apartment complexes and cabins and commercial establishments.
The Beginning of a Journey That Blends Innovation & Success
Shaisal, who was born to Yoosuf, a former Assistant Manager at Saud Bahwan, and Jameela, a homemaker, did his schooling in Oman and went on to bag an Engineering degree from Vinayaka Mission Engineering College in Salem. He came back to the Sultanate in 2009 to work with Al Jood Trading and Contracting as a mechanical engineer. From 2009 to 2012, he was involved in various power plant and electrical infrastructure projects during which he gained expertise in power generation, electrical distribution and generator operations. After joining Oasis Trading and Equipment LLC, the authorised dealer of Caterpillar, in 2012 as a Senior Sales Engineer, he received advanced training in Hybrid Solar Power Systems. It was this training that stoked his interest in hybrid power solutions and helped him gain expertise in renewable energy and energy storage technologies.
The Story Behind Voltova
After a successful stint at Oasis, Shaisal resigned and established Middle East Pearl International LLC together with his elder brother, Faizal, and his wife, Yasmin, a Computer Science Engineer. Right from the start, Shaisal proved his mettle by providing strong technical guidance based on his industrial expertise, and he played a major role in shaping the nascent firm’s growth.
The firm started functioning with a team of around six employees and it specialised in cable laying, generator installation, fibre optic infrastructure work, battery energy storage systems and electrical maintenance. Gradually, it proved its mettle and it became a trusted service provider to leading organisations such as Schlumberger, GPS Gulf Petrochemical Solutions, Fairfield, Newrest, Oasis Trading & Equipment LLC, Strabag, Al Tasnim, Galfar Engineering & Contracting, and Al Baraka Oilfield Services. Shaisal’s extensive experience in power generation, hybrid energy systems, and renewable energy solutions made him think of introducing innovative products in the Omani market. Thus was born the Voltova Solar Hybrid Air Conditioner, which became a game-changer of sorts in the country by being an AC-DC Hybrid Technology-based cooling system. To him goes the sole credit of successfully developing and expanding this innovative business venture.
Voltova in a Nutshell
Voltova is Oman’s first solar hybrid air conditioner. The harbinger of clean, green innovation in cooling solutions in the Sultanate, the Hybrid AC-DC Solar Air Conditioner is designed to seamlessly integrate with a sustainable lifestyle and provide advanced energy-saving technology that harnesses the power of the sun. While ensuring optimal cooling for all sorts of buildings, both residential and commercial, Voltova also reduces the carbon footprint. Designed to maximise efficiency in an eco-friendly way, the air-conditioner operates partly or up to 100% on direct current (DC) from solar panels during the day when there is bright sunlight and easily switches to alternating current (AC) from the grid at night or when it is cloudy or raining. This requires no batteries, inverter or charge controller. All it needs are dedicated PV panels to deliver huge savings to the end user.
This innovative air-conditioner comes in several types such as split, cassette, duct, window, multi-zone and DC 48V Off-grid 18K BTU. Its plus points include reduced power bills, battery-less operation during daytime, automatic solar prioritisation, generator compatibility, smart inverter technology, lower carbon emissions and quick return on investment. This air-conditioner is suitable for both remote sites as well as cabins. It is a plug and play setup and it can go with the present wiring of the building.
Apart from the hybrid air-conditioner in its varied avatars, the company also produces the AC-DC Solar Water Chiller and Heat Pump for rooftop water tanks. It provides water heating up to 65 degrees Celsius in the cold winter and water cooling down to 5 degrees Celsius in the hot summer. It is a cent-percent solar panel-driven DC inverter compressor and has a built-in DC water pump off-grid working by solar power. There is also a smart touch screen wire controller.
In short, the company continues its mission of providing electro-mechanical works, energy solutions, and power backup systems while also managing the dealership, distribution, installation, and maintenance of Voltova Solar Hybrid Air Conditioners. Family and Passions
Shaisal is supported in his endeavours by his better half, Yasmin, who is a Computer Science Engineering graduate and a Director of the company. They have three children: Shahsin is in Class VIII while Shahziya is in Class V and Shahzan is in KG 1. Professional life apart, this innovative entrepreneur loves travelling and also cruising through the highway on his favourite motorbike.
